About Seart Driftwood

Vytautas J Kavaliauskas is a contemporary artist born in 1960 in Kaunas, Lithuania. For the past 15 years, he has been transforming raw driftwood into modern art sculptures and large-scale installations.

“I have always been interested in visual arts and loved working with wood, making models and basic sculptures since I was a little boy, however, I have never taken my artistic side seriously, until I discovered driftwood. More than 15 year ago, looking for an escape from my busy routine, I moved to the Curonian Spit and started taking long walks along the shores of the Baltic Sea. Very soon started to notice the unique pieces of wood washed ashore. Each piece of driftwood is already a sculpture as it reaches the coastline, but my job as a creator is to carve away the parts that do not belong to the story. I see this work as a creative challenge, an adventure, a jazz improvisation.”
